Swapping a 305 into place of a 454
I bought a super clean 1999 suburban from a buddy for $250. The engine was knocking super bad so I pulled it. I have a 305 tbi from a 96 truck and was wondering what I will need to do to swap it. I know I should just rebuild the 454 but I can’t afford to do so right now. I’m not too worried about loss of power I’m Really just wondering what problems I might have.
any tips would be appreciated it’s my first engine swap

It depends on all kinds of variables. The 305 may need a computer. The 454 might have been bolted to a Turbo 400 transmission. Not sure if the 305 will even bolt to a turbo 400 at all. And engine mounts, etc, etc.. I'd really try to rebuild that 454. If you do the work yourself it might not be super expensive. If the knocking is worn bearings where the rods meet the crank shaft, and nothing's seriously damaged you might get by for a while by cleaning up the surfaces and installing new bearings. What you'll spend on conversion parts might pay for the rebuild. A 305's going to be mighty puny in that configuration.

I'm here for the party
a few issues i see, not saying the 96 isnt a tbi but it should be as they should have been phased out by 95. the burb should have a th400 it should have either 4l65e or 4l80e depending on the gvwr. but im with silverfox, it makes no sense and will be a complete mistake to put the 305 in there. you will loose what little gas millage you have before with the 454. best bet is either replace the motor with another 454 so its a direct bolt on or look into putting in another motor no smaller than the 5.3. also the tbi unit wont work with the computer in the burb and the tbi computer wont work with the trans you have
