Question Temperature Gauge vs. Thermostat *Please help!*

Hi - I have a 2015 Chevy Tahoe. I drove for 25 min and noticed the temp gauge never moved. I then drove another 25 min home and as soon as I pulled in the driveway, the engine light came on. The only thing that seemed to be the problem was that the fan was constantly running. It even ran for a few more minutes after I turned the it off. I've googled and saw that it could be just the temp sensor and not necessarily the thermostat. I brought it to a mechanic hoping they can quickly swap it out. He quickly returned saying the code shows it was the sensor and the thermostat. He went back in the garage and the other mechanic who was still in the area I was in asked if I was losing coolant. To my knowledge, it didn't seem so. He then said "it's probably just the sensor". lol That day wasn't a good day to be without a vehicle so I took it back home. As soon as I took off, I realized the gauge went up again and, as I continued to drive it stayed around 170ish. When I stopped, I let the car run and the temp gauge went up to about 180ish. Not sure if those are normal...I'm pretty sure the fan never came on after leaving there either.

Needless to say, I thought it was odd that the gauge would work again by checking the code. Is that normal? I'm wondering if I should replace the sensor to see if it resolved the issue. Then I found this site and figured I'd ask everyone here.

Any insight will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Welcome from Florida. It is possible that when checking the sensor one of the mechanics touched the wire connecting the sensor thereby making a good connection from a loose one.

Hi - Thank you from RI! That is a great thought. Unfortunately, I waited in the office so I didn't see what he did. Would the engine light go off if the issue did resolve?

It should but not right away. Depending on how much you drive, it could take a day or two.

Unplugging the battery should turn it off.
