Your buddy doesn't know how to change oil.
But it won't hurt anything.

when draining the oil it depends on time and ground surface. if the car or truck is in a surface slanted forward it wont drain all the way. when I drain my oil I add about a half quart when empty and let it drain to get all the remaining stuff out. hope that helps.

Thanks for the comeback but the veichle was on a drive on rack sitting level and we gave the used oil sufficent time to drain.

Well then I guess you added too much. Get it all out and add only what you need.

the filter being empty or not effects the amount a little but filling it is more to prevent a dry start up. I'm not sure if pump pulls straight out of filter.

I filled the filter when I changed mine and didn't notice the oil pressure coming up any faster than with a dry filter. Also had to use a breaker bar on the filter adapter to get the old filter off. Noticed that GM used some kind of red sealant on the gasket. Not sure why. Other than that, it was one of the easiest oil changes I've done. Also not sure why the filter is so small.

The oil capacity in the book is an estimate; the final 1/2 quart of oil should be added a little at a time until the desired level on the dip stick is reached.
GM engineers are aware that oil is often added to excess so they build in a fudge factor of about an extra quart that is allowed before causing any trouble.

Thank You! ZX I know your opinion and knowledge is respected on this forum. So I will not be too worried about the High Level on the Dipstick or trying to drain any out, I was i little concerned beacuse the oil level was about 1/2 inch below the upper hash mark before I changed it. I know we put six quarts in. Next oil change I will top it off until it is on the upper end of the hash marks. By the same token my 2001 F-150 5.4 Super Crew is listed at six quarts, It actually takes six and 1/2 to get the level to the top of the hash marks on the stick But it has been running with 6 for 76k trouble free miles so far. Thank You all for the Feedback. My "Buddy" and his associate enjoyed the 2007 Hood Closing Demo I gave them.
