Default Unkown sensor on Windshield 99 Escalade/Denali/Tahoe?

I have a 99 Escalade (similar to tahoe&gmc denali) that I am trying to figure out what the sensor mounted on inside of windshield just to the right of rearview mirror is(as seen from drivers seat). Sensor is a square about 1" x 1" and is attached in a similar way as the rearview mirror is. Wires go up into the headliner. Rearview mirror does have a compass, outside temperature reading capability and the mirrors darken electronically.

Damaged windshield will be replaced soon and would like to figure out what this sensor is used for before having work done. Concerned that whatever function this sensor serves before windshield is removed may not be there when windshield is replaced.

Thoughts are: something to do with On-Star, outside temperature, compass, day night light sensor or security system?

Anyone know what it is used for?

Thanks
