Most filters have a recommendation on the side or on the package. Mr. Goodwrench says 3/4 turn after gasket touches.

I wholeheartedly agree with ZX.

Ideally, you want to get it as tight as you can get it with your hand then another 1/4 turn with a wrench.

And yes I also agree with ZX. They work better when they are tight!
