Whinny/Howling Four Wheel Drive

Greeting,
I have a 2002 Suburban and a few weeks ago decided to put in four wheel drive just to make sure everything is in working order before we got snow. As it turns out, it engaged the front end just fine but I noticed a whinny or howling sound from the front end and it was relative to speed. I slid under the front end and found gear lube all around the passenger side output shaft. After talking to several shops, they tell me it is common for these seal to wear out. Is that true? Is it whining or howling because it is low on fluid? If I don't get it taken car of right away, do I risk doing further damage?
Thanks,
Happy Holidays
