2000 Suburban with 220k with laundry list of repairs needed- WORTH IT?
Hi all!
We just bought our first suburban, a 2000 1500. It came with 220k, and pretty decent records of repair. Normally, we’d get one with less miles but we got this at wholesale cost for $1500.
We took it to our mechanic to be looked over and was given a list miles long from big repairs to small. Overall, with parts and labor, it would cost around 3500 to do it all. KBB still values this vehicle at around $5,000 so my thought is, is it worth it?
the major repairs to be done are:
- parking brake shoes
-oil leaking from the engine to the drip pan and gasket
- needs new ABS unit
3RD BRAKE LIGHT IS OUT
IDLER AND PITMAN ARMS ARE VERY SLOPPY
BRAKE FLUID IS BLACK, NEEDS FLUSHED
TRANS FLUID IS DARK, NEEDS FLUSHED
WIPER TRANS IS SO SLOPPY THE WIPER HIT THE COWLING
so, we bought the vehicle knowing that if they’re taken care of, they last. Is it worth putting $2-3k in at this point? Thanks!!

If you repair it, it isn't at wholesale cost anymore. What condition is the body and interior in? How does it drive? Have a compression check done on the engine to see what shape it is in. If all else is good then it is probably worth it at this point.
Money-pit type items I had on my 2001 Suburban:
front wheel hub/bearing assemblies - one piece, expensive
A/C components - clutch, compressor
Fuel pump - yours most likely is on at least #2, they tend to last about 100k miles, PITA to replace because you have to drop the tank
exhaust manifold gaskets - both were leaking
My buddy now owns it, original powertrain and it has 250k miles.
