Default Front axle noise when in 2wd

1997 Chevy Tahoe, 4wd, 5.7 v8, over 220k miles. Front driver side drive shaft leaks oil. After loss of some oil, starting making noise when starting from a stop in 2wd, makes noise at low speed, then above 20 mph, grinding stops. Engage the 4wd and makes no noise at any speed. Since adding oil to pumpkin, this only happens once awhile for a very breif period. Have read a previous thread like this but felt it did not fit my problem. Or do I need to feed my vin number to find out the drive train that is in my tahoe?

Default VIN & RPO Decodeing

Ava, having the build on your Vehicle is very informative, go to...
http://www.decodethis.com/
for that, but it may not tell you just what Gear you're running.

The RPO Tag is much more informative about specific equipment
you have, which is found in the Glove Box. Here are several sources
to check the installs. Several here because not all of the sources
have all the RPO's.

If you don't find your code in one, just keep lookng
