Default Transfer Case

I have a 1994 K2500 Chevy Suburban. With a 4" suspension and a 3" body lift. An NP241C transfer case and a 4L80E transmission with an update kit. I can go from 2H to 4H and back no problem. But I have to put the truck in neutral, shut it off, put it in 4L and restart the truck. If you try to go out of neutral on the transfer case while the truck is running it grinds. If you try to put the truck in park it grinds. I tried adjusting the linkage but it made no difference. I don't think it's coming out of 4 wheel drive because the front tires slide if you turn very sharp and i only get 3 mpg with a 5.7 L engine. Any ideas?
