Default 1998 tracker 1.6 hard top, valve cover gasket maybe?

Hi y'all. I got a 98 tracker with the 1.6 ltr 4cyl, 4 wheel drive. Homemade camo paint over the factory teal greenish/blue. Not the prettiest tracker out there, but fun. Has 128k. Rust around all the fender wells, lots of orange all around the motor.(we got that hard orange clay down here around the lake) Well, couple days ago it started running little rough. I found a plug that was soaked with oil. The 1st plug in the tube starting from the fire wall had oil all in it. I cleaned the oil out of the tube best I could and changed the plug along with the other 3 plugs. Used wal-marts autolite 3923's. They helped it run a little bit better. But someone said I needed to change the "valve cover gasket". I assume I should have gotten plug wires as well. I guess I can still go get those today. And I think I can do the valve cover gasket job. Right? Can we do it right here at the house or is it too important of a job and needs to be done at a dealership or qualified garage? Well, I decided to go to Oreillys and get the gasket kit. Thought I'd go ahead and do it here. It came with a big blue rubber gasket and these 4 round black rubber things size of a quarter.(for spark plug tubes maybe?) Theres no rtv in the box. I'm sure they aint sending no rtv. I got to buy that myself. If I'm even supposed to use it! I dont know. Has anyone ever done the valve cover gaskets at home by chance? Y'all prob know by now any guidance I can get is very much appreciated and if y'all think theres anything I'm gonna run across throughout this job thats going to be tricky, that'd be nice to know too. Anyway, thanks lot for any help!
