Default 2002 Tracker - Strange Noises

Hi guys - first post here. Just picked up my 2002 4-door, 4X4, 2.0L a few weeks ago. Just wondering if any of you know possible causes of these two noises I hear:

1) There is a loud noise which sounds like it is coming from the front passenger's side, either under the hood or near the tire. At first it seemed like the noise was related to acceleration. It was a faint noise (a woosh sound) when accelerating. I thought something was rubbing, but last night I noticed the sound while idling with the transmission in park. So I'm thinking it must be either a moving part under the hood, or could it be a vacuum leak? It didn't last long enough for me to get out and isolate the sound. Any thoughts?

2) When in 4WD I noticed that when I turn sharp left (on hard packed rock/gravel) something to do with the drive of the front tires makes a loud thud with every couple of inches I travel and sends a vibration through the vehicle.

Any thoughts as to what these sounds might be? Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

whining sounds like it's coming from the drive belt system... replace the belt, and while you have the old belt off, rotate each of the pullies to see if one is making the strange noise... it will be hard to tell at low rev speeds, so listen carefully.

Also, check all your fluids, particularly your power steering, coolant, and tranny fluid..

The problem with the thudding noise while turning sounds like it could be a problem with your alignment... on wet, or slippery surfaces the tires will drag, and when they realign it kinda jumps into place, causing the thud noise and probably a pretty intense thumping the cabin too... You can probably find somewhere where they offer free alignment checks...

either that or you'll want to have a pro check out your transfer case and/or all that good stuff... but start with the basics first :-)
