Default Advice needed for offroading in Tracker

I am looking for a vehicle for some light off roading, mainly fire roads. I read that becasue the 89 and up Trackers had rack and pinion steering to stay away from these because they are easily damaged? If that is true any recommendations for a vehicle that won't be damaged?

How much damage can you do with light off roading mainly on fire roads?
But I would go with 1999 or newer just because of parts availability.
Good luck.
