My steering feels loose and not safe, what could be causing this?

Sounds like something came loose or broke. Did you look at your ball joints, sway bar or anything attaching to it? Definitely some of the first things to check.

Check the front crossmember for corrosion. If it is rusted severely, it can cause this condition. It would need to be replaced if it is defective. This would be a major safety concern to me.
