Default Rack and Pinion Swap

Hello,

I own an 04 Chevy Tracker and bought it for off-roading. Has anyone ever swapped out the rack and pinion steering for a more durable off road type steering? I read on some threads that when they were making the 2nd gen trackers they chose a rack and pinion type steering and that made it undesirable for off-road enthusiasts. How weak is the rack and pinion on these cars when used off roading? My initial thoughts were to find the steering components from the 1st gen trackers and see if it fits in my 2nd gen. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
