Default Starting Issue please help

I am trying to help a friend with his tracker and have problems. He was driving and stopped to eat and when he came out it made some noises then wouldnt start. He put in a new battery and it still wouldnt start. This is when he called me in. I tried to start it and it makes one tick noise the nothing after words. I checked the oil it doesnt register on the dipstick. Both battery post connections are cracked. I pulled the starter and it turns fine on the bench at NAPA with no load. I am at a loss. Could it possibly be that there is no oil? A low oil sensing unit? Maybe a relay or fuse? Its automatic so no clutch switch. I tried to also jump it with the same results. What should i do?

Did you try to rotate the engine by hand? With no oil on the dipstick it could have siezed the engine once it cooled down.

put a quart of oil to see if it will show on the stick. If so add the second one, that will tell you if it was low or out, out is not good. Your friend needs to look under his hood more often.
