Default Tracker 101: intro to ignition timing

In the old days all you needed to set the ignition timing was a timing light and a distributor wrench.

You pointed the timing light at the crankshaft pulley and rotated the distributor until the notch
on the pulley lined up with the timing marks. Timing was controlled by a "vacuum advance"
which could be taken out of the circuit by unplugging the vacuum line. The Tracker's
coil-on-plug ignition did away with the distributor and the PCM has replaced the vacuum advance.

You still need a timing light, but now you also need a Tracker specific scanner to "disconnect" the "vacuum advance."

After locking the the ignition timing at 5° BTDC...

... aim the timing light at the crank pulley...

... rotate the camshaft position sensor...

... until the pully notch...

... is half-way between 0° and 10° on the crankcase pointer.

Some of the Suzuki Vitara's had a diagnostic connector under the hood that would lock the spark
advance at 5° if two pins were shorted together. My Tracker does not have that connector so a
bi-directional scanner is required to adjust the timing.
