Default Which Tracker for me?

Hi all, new to this forum so wanted to drop by and say hello and see if y'all would help me pick a Tracker? I do a lot of camping and kayaking in Az and thereabouts and would like to find a nice small SUV that gets great gas mileage and can tow a small trailer. I have looked on wiki and it appears that the 1st gen might be a more rugged vehicle + I like the squarish looks but am open to the later models if they are as well built. Leaning towards a stick 4X4 2 door but would like to hear how the autos trans have been working out. Also what engine(s) to look for? So what is the best year and combo that you guys that already own Trackers would recommend? Thanks in advance, Dach.

I towed my boat with my 93 Tracker (~1200 lbs) a few times and had problems with even low hills on the freeway.

You would probably be okay with a lightweight utility trailer or tent trailer but be very cautious about weight.
