Strong gas smell only when tank is LESS than 1/4 full

Strong gas smell only when tank is LESS than 1/4 full
Good morning!
08 TB 4.2
I have a strong gas smell when the gas tank is LESS than 1/4 full. When I fill to anywhere above 1/2 a tank, the smell is gone.
I've heard of the reverse; fill the tank and there's a gas smell (leak in upper area of gas tank)..
The smell is strongest at the left rear door (NOT at gas cap).
Any suggestions?
Hopefully I get some quick answers as I've also got to replace some exhaust parts and I'm pretty certain that gas fumes and sparks won't have the result I'm hoping for
Btw, there's no fuel Mark's on the ground and no codes showing anything related to fuel delivery, only faulty coolant sensor.
