Default 06 DRLs not turning off automatically

We have an 06 Uplander, and over the last few days, the DRLs have stopped turning off automatically after shutting off the ignition. They will generally go out after the doors are locked, but not always.

Also, it seems that the DRLs are coming on by themselves after the ignition has been turned off. We double check to make sure the lights are off, but when we check later, they are on. It is dark when we do this, so there's not any mistake.

We know that we are needing to replace the battery...is it possible that this is causing it?

I would appreciate any help I can get with this. I really don't want to have to take this in, so if it's something simple, that would be great.

Thanks!

Why do you know you have to replace the battery? They usually last 6-7 years.
How long have you owned this vehicle?

We bought the vehicle new in July 2006.

My husband thought we needed a new battery because we were listening to the radio without the ignition running (waiting for son to get out of school, maybe 20-30 minutes) and it drained the battery and we had to get a jump. I guess he just assumed that the battery was getting weak after that happened. I am so not car literate, so I just trusted what he said.

Is there a piece of paper or something covering the light sensor on the dash? That would make the computer think that it is nighttime and keep the lights on.

How long do the lights stay on after the doors are locked?
