Clunking, crushing sound steering
Hi
I want to share how I solved a clunking sound coming from the steering driver side, it happened being the car stopped or tipically the movement you do while parking the car , and you turn the wheels from one side to another there was a clunking, crushing sound, also when you were near to a stop feel a sound like coming front the front springs. I changed everything , struts, struts mounts, lower ball joints, lower ball bushings etc. I was near to buy a new intermediate steering wheel shaft, when I tried to solve the problem spraying with oil in the upper side of the intermediate steering wheel shaft, just the cross joint that you look from inside the car over the border of the rubber boot that cover this shaft, and problem solved, no more clunk crashing. Now I know I must to grease it in order to have a final solution, I guess cause I do not know if it is greasable, does anyones knows this part in order to get a recomendation?
Fernando

Hi Fernando -
The intermediate shaft is not supposed to be greased, there are many cases of all kinds of noises caused by it. That being said, I suppose you can't hurt anything by putting some grease on part of it. I would recommend a high temperature grease which will be less prone to melt in the heat and drop off onto your shoes. The best fix would be to just replace it as the aftermarket ones seem to be much quieter,
I have read where the source of some noises is actually the shaft rubbing against the rubber boot. I have seen this described as a quacking sound sort of like a duck. This is remedied by putting some lithium grease along the inside of the top of the rubber boot. A thin coat will keep things quiet for a long time. GM dealers actually sell a special grease for the boot too. Supposedly it lasts much longer though I don't know what it is made of.
