Default 09 Uplander Metal Bang Sound on Bumps

Hi,

When I drive over bumps in the road I hear a loud bang/clunk sound from the back of the van.
I know this is from the rear of the van because I can hear the metal banging sound only when the back wheels have hit the bump in the road.
I replaced the rear air shocks but I still hear the same noise from outside when the window is opened.
Does anyone know what this noise might be?

Thanks.

Adding to this old post.
I have the same issue.
'05 Uplander with sharp metallic clunk from rear.
Replaced rear shocks that were completely bad.....no better.
Got car on lift and looked.....smacked with a rubber mallet......everything I could imagine.
I could find nothing. No loose spare.
I am at a loss.
Any ideas??
TIA
Dean

Check the emergency brake cable where it goes along the rear axle.

Thank You PB.
The cable is not loose in the rear.
The sound is a deep and very noticeable clunk or metallic thud.
Similar to the sound the sound the shock bolts made when the shock went bad.....but different. Maybe both sounds were happening at that time.
BTW - I did go back and re-torque the shock mount bolts in case I did not get one of them tight enough.....no difference.
Thank You Again

could be a broken spring or bolt. ive had u-joint "ping" when they went bad before but it was usually if i was going up a hill or something like that

Well the muffler, the gas tank and the parking brake* (mine made an ugly sound until I tightened the slack) are but a few things to investigate.

I had an annoying metallic rattle coming from the rear when going over bumps/uneven pavement on my '06 Uplander LS. Turns out that the heat shield over the muffler was loose. I cut some pipe insulation into strips and wedged them between the heat shield and floor. Problem solved!

i had recent pops and clunks in the front that sounded like suspension but ended up being the exhaust heatshield up front.
i have had broken exhaust hangers sound like wornout suspension in other vehicles...
