Occasionally, when the van is started, the gas gauge needle goes below the gauge.
How do I access the sending unit to check the connector?
What else could be causing this?

behind the driver's seat underneath there is two connections right together. they are corroded as hell and run to the fuel tank. unplug the battery first and clean them up really well. hopefully that does it for you.
