Resetting the Check Engine Oil Light with CID
On newer Silverado 1500s, you can reset the check engine oil light using the buttons on your steering wheel. Turn the ignition on without starting the truck. Use the up, down, left and right arrow buttons to navigate the menus on the display on your instrument cluster. Find the info menu for engine oil life. It will probably give you a message to change the oil. Press and hold the check button on your steering wheel for several seconds. It should give you a confirmation that the check engine oil display has been reset. Turn off the ignition then start the truck.
If it worked, then the light should come on for a second to do a check then shut off.
Pro Tip
Always do this immediately after changing the engine oil, otherwise it will throw off the sensor and it will give you incorrect readings when you check the display.
Resetting the Check Engine Oil Light Without CID
For older trucks or trucks that did not come with the CID display, resetting the check engine oil light is just as simple. Start with the key in ignition, but turned off, and put your foot over the gas pedal. Turn the ignition on without starting the engine then rapidly press and depress on the gas pedal three times. You have to do this within five seconds of turning the ignition on.
If it worked, then it should display a message saying the check engine oil light has been reset. If not, turn the ignition off and start again. To check if it worked, turn the ignition off and on again and the check engine oil light should come on for a few seconds then shut off.
