I'm considering buying a 1995 G20 Sportvan with the 5.7L.


However, I'm not very familiar with anything but the '86 and older G-series vans I've worked on.

Are there any common problems with the '87+ vans or that year of the 5.7L that I should be aware of, and look for?

Are fuel system problems (pump failures, in particular) as common with the EFI vans as they were with the C/K?

It's a 110" WB - I'm told that's fairly rare?

Everything looked good, including cold AC, except for hesitation and knocking under low rpm acceleration.

It felt like it had a massive dead spot in the throttle, but responded quickly if the pedal was pressed to 50%+ or even just stomped to the floor. It was just ~15-30% throttle where the hesitation and notable knocking would occur.

The research I've done points to the issue being a bad or disconnected EGR valve (based on the situational knocking), with the options for a bad TPS, and possibly a timing issue.

I'm still interested, as long as the problem seems to be a relatively simple fix....
Am I on the right track? Or is there something else I'm missing?
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Knocking? I would have a engine compression test before buying it. While doing that have the mechanic check it over. 95 is a good year.

You can swap the two injectors to see if the main fuel injector is bad. The other one is the secondary. I had a 95 and it was bulletproof. Bad hinges, rust issues, worn tranny if abused, and front end wear are good places to start to look at. Engine is solid if not worn out. Mine was great, but expect crappy gas mileage....13 maybe.

greenfire, the knocking is caused by the ECM(/ECU/PCM/VCM - whatever they call it for that year) adjusting timing and fuel mixture, when it recognizes the EGR fault.
