Attack it from the rear. Check the sockets at the taillights. make sure they are clean and are making good contact to the bulbs. Also make sure there is a good ground connection.

Default help

that is one of the first things i checked after my earlier post. its a power issue it seems but i'm still clueless on how to resolve it. if i run a jumper wire from battery hot to the splice in the lights i can get them to come on so i checked continuity on my wires and they have continuity all the way to the connection box up front. im at a loss

Go all the way to the switch. If you say you have continuity to the connection box then you have go to the switch and make sure power is coming out of the switch.

Default confused

replaced switched with new one. could it be signal switch? light switch is new and hi/low switch works fine. no reverse light or blinkers or tail lights. brake lights work if lights are off but stop working once lights are on

Double the wiring at the switch. Something has to be wrong. You said if you run a wire from battery to lights they work. You might have to run new wires from switch to rear lights and bypass the problem.
