Default Shift from first

When I smash the gas, my 08 impala red lines and I think cuts off. I don't know of it's a sensor protecting the engine or if it's a malfunction. The car rides smooth when I'm cruzin. But if I wanna race someone I have to let off of the gas for it to shift then smash it again? Any ideas? It's an LT.

It's not a race car and yes the engine has a rev limiter in the ECM to prevent you from blowing up the motor.

Default Rev limiter

I know it has a rev limiter in park and neutral but does it have one in drive?

Any automatic should shift into the next gear when in 'D' without having to back off and force a shift.

Does this transmission run it's line pressure with vacuum?

My 94 f-body shifts from 1-2 if you redline in 1.
