I recently bought a 2000 Silverado 4x4 Ext Cab Lt Z71. when you hit the $x4 button the transfercase locks but the front wheels do not pull....any suggestions on what the problem could be? It even locks into Low range but is still 2wd

There is an actuator on the front differential, looking from the front it is mounted on the long axle shaft with an electrical plug on it. That unit engages the carrier to the axles when in 4x4 hi or lo. It unscrews from the housing, a little oil may come out. Check this since you feel sure the transfer case is engaging. Also check to see if front drive line is engaged when in 4 hi. To lock in 4 lo you must be in nuetral, foot on brake and better if engine off but key on. 4 hi can be engaged at low speeds.
