Default Engine Upgrade

I have a 96 that is in need of a replacement engine and tranny...What yrs. are direct bolt in for this truck. I can't afford new or rebuilt so I'll be shopping the local pick and pay looking for this stuff. The truck has 265K on it and I want to upgrade to a 350 as the old 305 is very tired as is the tranny.

Ebay is good, but you have to pay shipping. Engines and trannys are heavy and bulky thus high shipping cost. Better off at the local junk yards when on a budget.

I'd try to stick sound a 96-98 350 and 4L60e. See if you can find a decent low mileage setup

96 thru 98 is a very narrow window..."Cash for Clunkers ruined alot of good engines.
This may be a problem

After 99 they stopped the 350 so you've got from I think 94 or 95 when they did the 4L60e and 350 combo. Before that they had a 350, but was a 700r4

96 was the first yr. for vortec so I guess I'm stuck as the induction system changed to that spyder system for a short period.

As long as you are swapping the tyranny, upgrading to a 4L80E would be good.

I think you will need a new ECU if you get any different engine model than the 1 it came with the truck.
For example, if you have an LO5 and are dropping in an LS1, you would need an LS1 ECU
