Exhaust Issues

Exhaust Issues
I recently bought a set of super 44 mufflers for my pickup, and had them put on instead of the old glass packs that I had on there in High school. After I got to the exhaust shop I noticed they were put on sideways and not flat (parallel to the ground). The mechanic said that was the only way I was going to be able to mount them on my truck. I was wondering if I could move them closer to my driveline, or move them further back, closer to my rear end? He said that the heat would not be good for my rear end. Any Suggestions? All Comments are greatly appreaciated.

Its an 1986 GMC Sierra Classic. 2WD, 3/4 Ton, Crew Cab, Long Bed, 454, and Turbo 400 Tranny. The Exhaust diameter is 2.5". There are no cats on the truck, there are no emmissions what so ever on it. The old original mufflers rusted out on my mom, so i slapped some cherry bombs up there along time ago. But I got some Super 44 Flowmasters and had them put up. Just the mufflers, not the whole system.
