Why We Need the Colorado ZR2 Now More Than Ever

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Concept

Many people, including myself, are excited at the possibility of Chevrolet green-lighting the Colorado ZR2 project, we still haven’t heard if or when it’s actually going to happen. That doesn’t mean it won’t, based on our last report of the viability of the product, but we really think they should. This doesn’t come from a position of lust, either. The Colorado ZR2 is a unique product that Chevrolet needs in what’s becoming a pretty competitive niche marketplace.

There’s a new Ford Raptor coming, which we keep seeing more and more of as we get closer to the launch next year. Also, the folks at Ram Trucks have just started shipping the Ram Rebel. While one could argue that the Colorado Z71 Trail Boss is the answer, it isn’t. It really isn’t.

A ZR2 would have a unique advantage over the other two. First, the truck is smaller. When off-roading that means the ZR2 could go places that the other two trucks couldn’t.

Second, it has a diesel engine. Ford doesn’t use a diesel in their half-ton pickup trucks, and Ram hasn’t committed to putting their 3.0L EcoDiesel into the Rebel yet. That would give the ZR2 another competitive advantage.

Lastly, it’s just plain cool.

If Toyota continues their TRD Pro line of products, then you have even more competition in this segment. Now, more than ever, the bosses at Chevrolet need to make the Colorado ZR2 happen.
