Is Chevrolet Going to Put the Colorado ZR2 Into Production?
At the Los Angeles auto show last year, Chevrolet pulled the covers off of a pretty cool concept truck. Called the ZR2, it featured some serious off-road hardware mated to the company’s 2.8L Duratec diesel engine. Additionally, it looked pretty badass. To us, the truck looked pretty production-ready. Now that it’s the first week of August, are we any closer to getting the ZR2?
I reached out to Otie McKinley, the go-to guy when it comes to Colorado information, and he had this to say about the ZR2;
There has been no change in the status of the ZR2. We continue to receive rave reviews of the concept we showed in LA, but there are no announcement to make about bringing the ZR2 to production.
While this pretty much means there’s no ZR2 to be had anytime soon, it should be noted that Chevrolet is well aware of the fact that people want to see this truck built. They are not oblivious to our desire to have this truck.
Recently, Chevrolet revealed an updated-for-2016 Colorado Z71 Trail Boss, which looks more and more like it is designed for off-road work. While technically it’s not much different from a regular Z71, it gives us hope that Chevrolet is working on something to cater to the off-road crowd.
My guess? Chevrolet is waiting to see how well the Trail Boss sells and how well the diesel engine takes off. We now know pricing for the diesel Colorado, just not fuel economy. If sales are strong of those models, Chevrolet should have the business case to put the ZR2 into production.
I hope so. I want to see this truck.
