GM Invests $877 Million In Flint Assembly Upgrades

Trucks are the bread and butter of the Big 3 automakers. The margins they make in pickup truck sales make up for the razor-thin margins on the economy cars. But to keep up with demand and continue to produce a quality product, GM needs a few upgrades. Those upgrades are coming as part of an $877 million investment in the Flint Assembly Plant.

What does these upgrades include? An all-new body shop is on the way, and will be constructed closer to the Flint Metal Center. In an ideal situation, raw materials would enter the plant on one side, and a completed truck would come out the other. Moving the body shop closer makes it easier to work towards this goal.

Since 2011, General Motors has announced $1.8 billion in investments in the plant. If that’s not an indication of how important truck sales are, then I don’t know what is.
