2022 Silverado: Is the Refresh Enough to Best the Competition?
A revamped interior and upgraded technology headline the changes in the 2022 Silverado lineup. Are they enough to take on Ford and Ram?
The 2022 Silverado lineup received a substantial refresh. The lineup even gained a new model with the debut of the ZR2. The interior design and the technology in the new trucks are leaps and bounds ahead of the previous models. But this is an extremely competitive segment and Ram and Ford have not been sitting on their hands either. Do all the changes to the 2022 Silverado lineup add up to a class-leading truck? Or does Chevy still have more work to do?
The folks at Edmunds Cars recently posted a video on their YouTube channel. In this video they try to answer that question. They provide an overview of the 2022 Silverado lineup and do a bit of a deeper dive on some specific models. However, they only have tested the ZR2 model. And as cool as that hardcore off-road model is, it is not exactly representative of the overall Silverado lineup. So, we would like to know what our members of Chevrolet Forum think. Are you happy with the changes made for 2022? Or are you disappointed in the current Silverado lineup?
Areas of Concern
Let’s get some of the potential concerns out of the way up front. Probably the biggest is the new base engine. In most of the lineup the new base engine is a 4-cylinder. It is a 2.7L turbocharged four that makes 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. So, it is no weakling. But for some folks having a 4-banger in a Silverado is a no-go. Of course, there is the option for a V8 or a turbo-diesel 6-cylinder. The new interior looks great. But is it as functional and comfortable as the offerings from Ford and Ram? Some details like the center storage are not as well thought out as in the Ford for example. It is a minor point, but sometimes the little details make the difference.
Strong Points
Super Cruise is the best hands-free driving technology available in a pickup truck today. However, it is only available on the top-spec High Country model. But the rest of the technology in the Silverado is also strong. The infotainment screens are large and responsive. They are worlds ahead of the previous generation. The camera system on the Silverado offers fantastic views all around the truck. The Multi-Flex tailgate is also a very slick and useful feature. The Silverado also offers a strong selection of optional engines that make it extremely competitive in areas of towing and payload. And let’s not forget it is a Chevy.
Conclusion
This is one where you need to draw your own conclusion. For some, the bowtie badge is all that matters, and a Ford, Ram or Toyota will never do. Others are not as brand loyal and are looking for the best truck to meet their needs. For these folks the details matter. Is Super Cruise important to you? Can you live with a 4-cylinder engine? Do you like the exterior design of the 2022 Silverado lineup? There are many questions you need to ask yourself when deciding on a new truck. Will the answer come up Silverado?
