2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Overlanding Build

The owner of this 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 was a Jeep fan, but he’s been blown away by his new mid-size pickup thus far.

Overlanding has exploded in popularity over the past few years, and for good reason – it’s a great way to get outdoors and explore the wilderness, and go places where most RVs simply cannot. These days, there are countless aftermarket companies churning out even more parts and accessories that enable us to conveniently transform our rigs into overlanding machines, complete with full kitchens, sleeping space, and all the amenities one might need to live anywhere for days at a time. Soon, this 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 will be doing precisely that, too.

Recently, the YouTube channel Head Up Throttle Down purchased a 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 for an overland build and accompanying video series, which is notable because the purveyor of the channel is admittedly a Jeep guy. Before that process begins, he’s racked up a few thousand miles on the truck and has already admittedly fallen in love with it in the process. He believes that the newest Chevy Colorado ZR2 is “the perfect overlanding platform” in fact, for a number of reasons.

For starters, the Multimatic DSSV shocks present on the Colorado ZR2 make it easy to traverse any sort of terrain, as our host points out, quickly adapting to any kind of surface they encounter. As our host also notes, this is a better alternative to smart shocks that can be complicated, with lots of things that can break or go wrong. As a result, the truck is stable and capable off the pavement, and its turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder powerplant makes plenty of power at 310 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque.

Then there are a ton of drive modes to choose from – including Baja – which make it easier to quickly change settings while on the fly. Despite that massive amount of torque and 33-inch tires, our host is even seeing decent fuel economy figures, but notes that a dedicated economy mode may be welcome given the fact that efficiency can suffer if one isn’t paying attention to the way they’re driving.

Regardless, our host also speaks glowingly of the Colorado ZR2’s tech, from the infotainment to the controls, all of which is easy to use and intuitive. The presence of loads of cameras makes it easier to go off the pavement as well, particularly if you don’t have a spotter to help – and they can even clean themselves, to boot, thanks to built-in washers. On top of that, our host points out that he hasn’t had a single problem navigating any kind of terrain he’s encountered so far – which bodes well for the future, when the Colorado ZR2 will be doing precisely that on a regular basis.
