Chevy Dealer Caught Selling Recalled Cars Red-Handed

It seems that no matter how many customer lounges with free coffee and WiFi dealerships cram into their outdated and stuffy showrooms, the old adage that dealerships are out to screw consumers will most likely never go away. Here’s yet another reason why…

Automotive News reports that Sands Chevrolet from Phoenix, Arizona got caught in the act of selling new and pre-owned vehicles with open recalls to the general public, something which isn’t only against manufacturer dealership agreements, but also illegal.

An investigation performed by the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), shows that Sands Chevrolet failed to inspect incoming used cars for open recalls before putting them back on sale, and failed to do the same with new units that sat on their lots for a long time. The same investigation found that several new hybrid recalled models were sold without the proper recall repairs, therefore making them a fire hazard that could lead to serious injury.

After the two year investigation, federal regulators, the NHTSA and Sands Chevrolet chose to settle and create a fail-proof system that won’t allow for such actions to happen again. Still, the federal government fined the dealership a total of $40,000 dollars.

This is also a remind for all consumers, that just because they buy a new or used car at a dealership, it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t do their homework when it comes to recalled vehicles.
