Chevrolet Goes All-In With Apple Car Play and Android Auto Support
Wow, that came out of practically nowhere. Today, CEO of General Motors, Mary Barra, announced that not only will General Motors be adopting both Apple Car Play and Android Auto technologies in their vehicles, but that it’ll appear in 14 different 2016 Chevrolet models! If you’re counting, that’s more than any other automaker supporting these connections.
Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system is pretty good these days, but some people would prefer to just use the mapping software on their phone. Others want to use a system that’s constantly updated, without expensive map and system updates. That’s where Apple Car Play and Android Auto come into play.
A customer gets into a Chevrolet vehicle properly equipped, and then plugs their phone into the car with a USB or Lightning cable. That’s all that’s required to experience their phone’s interface on the vehicle’s infotainment screen.
On the Apple end, you get access to Apple Maps, full Siri, iTunes Radio, and more! On the Android Auto end, you get Google Maps, as well as other supported apps.
The great thing about the setup is that you don’t have to decide when you buy the car which phone you want to use. Since the system supports both, you can switch phone brands with ease. For those of us into technology, this is seriously big news. I can’t wait to try it on a new Corvette!
