Chevy Solves Common Phone Problem With Simple Solution

By -

Engineers added a cold air vent to certain Chevrolets for the 2016 model year to help keep smart phones wirelessly charging in the car from overheating. The industry-first feature will be available in 2016 Chevrolet Impala, Malibu, Volt and Cruze models equipped with wireless charging and Chevrolet MyLink. The Active Phone Cooling feature works when the car’s heating, ventilation and cooling system is on.

Modern smartphones are technology masterpieces. We use them everyday to do just about everything, except make phone calls. But if you have a newer phone you’ll notice one thing; it gets warm. It gets warm when using it. It gets warm while charging it. Chevy has a solution to help the problem.

Active Phone Cooling

On the new Impala (along with other Chevrolet vehicles with wireless phone charging), Chevy has positioned an air conditioner vent directly next to the wireless charging cubby hole. When the air conditioner is on, it blows cool air over the phone.

Simple, right?

Heat can dramatically shorten the life of any electronic device, and when a device overheats it often shuts off and stops charging. This simple solution from Chevy should keep the device cooler, thus preventing annoying shutoffs and prolonging the life of the device.

Chevy really is taking a leading role in personal electronics in the vehicle. All of their cars with OnStar now have 4G LTE hotspotting. Soon, MyLink will support both Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Also, Chevrolet has offered wireless device charging for a little while now.

Sometimes difficult problems do have simple engineering solutions.
