Clapped-Out Chevy Shop Truck Gets ZZ632 Crate Motor Making 1,000 HP
Though it was left largely alone inside and out, this well-worn Chevy shop truck is now a fire-breathing beast with a monster motor.
Back in the fall of 2021, General Motors revealed its latest, perhaps most eye-opening crate engine to date – the ZZ632, which – as the name suggests – is a 632 cubic-inch monster of a motor. Churning out an incredible 1,004 horsepower and 876 pound-feet of torque, the ZZ632 is quite literally the automaker’s biggest and most powerful crate engine in the company’s illustrious history, and as one might imagine, it has also become quite popular among hot rodders and drag racers alike. Recently, the folks at Vice Grip Garage decided to do something a little different with the gigantic mill, however, and instead install one in their Chevy shop truck.
The idea here was pretty simple – team up with the folks at Motion Raceworks and create one of the most wicked sleepers we’ve ever laid eyes on. This particular Chevy truck is clearly well-used, sporting plenty of cosmetic flaws inside and out, which is perfectly fine for something that serves the purpose of hauling parts and people from one point to another. Of course, it could be more fun to complete those tasks in, which is a job that 1,000+ horsepower can always accomplish on its own.
Aside from a 632 cubic-inch infusion of power, this beat-up Chevy was also treated to a Powerglide transmission for acceleration’s sake, coupled to the famous Ford 9-inch rear end that’s robust enough to handle a four-digit output. The team at Vice Grip even gave the truck a custom active exhaust, so they can bottle up the big V8’s glorious sounds when desired, muffling them for those early morning cold starts that might otherwise wake up everyone in a one-mile radius.
Other than these beefy mechanicals, the crew at Vice Grip Garage opted to leave the rest as-is – meaning that it looks largely like an old, beat up Chevy truck, one of millions out there on the roads. Of course, the big and little tires and wing out back don’t help conceal what’s going on under the hood here, but otherwise, it’s certainly well-worn.
Likewise, the interior was left in bone stock condition, because why bother to spend money on something that’s going to get dirty anyway? In this case, Vice Grip spent money where it counts, and in the end, created one of the coolest shop trucks we’ve ever laid eyes on.
