Alaska Couple Embarks on Iconic Chevy Road Trip
The 2,000-mile trek from Kansas to Alaska was an adventure for the books.
Those who had the opportunity to witness this year’s solar eclipse will likely be sharing stories about it years from now. However, we doubt there will be many who will have a memory of the historic event as unique as the one that Fred and Susan Patterson were fortunate to share.
The Alaska couple decided to fly from Kodiak, Alaska, to Salina, Kansas, to experience the eclipse from 35,000 feet. But it’s their adventure home that makes the Patterson’s experience one of the most interesting we’ve come across here at Chevrolet Forum.
You see, instead of flying back to Alaska, the Pattersons, who are both 78, decided to make the 2,000-mile trek in a 1950 Chevrolet pickup, as detailed in a report by the Salina Journal.
Apparently, Fred bought the classic Seafoam Green pickup almost a year ago in Salina, where he has family and frequently visits. When their story was published on August 24, the couple said it would take about a month to make it back to Alaska’s Kodiak Island.
The Chevy truck only had 48,000 miles on the original engine when the couple started the trip, so, it certainly seemed up for the adventure. But in the event they run into some mechanical trouble, one of their relatives from Salina is already planning to meet them along their journey with tools in hand.
