1946 Chevy COE Is Ready to Haul Your Goods in Style

1946 Chevy COE

This once mighty Chevy COE workhorse has earned its retirement with a stunning makeover.

It’s no secret that we love the curvy Chevy trucks from the 40s and 50s. But one particular style we’re particularly guilty of crushing on is the charming hauler known as the cab-over-engine (COE). These hardcore workhorses from a bygone era are easily some of the coolest vehicles ever produced, period. And this 1946 Chevy COE is one of the finer examples of the breed you’ll ever lay eyes on.

We spotted the vintage hauler while perusing the upcoming Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas lots, which hit the block on October 19-21. And it’ll certainly be hard to miss this beautiful behemoth when it dominates the stage. Burgundy and black two-tone paint forms an attractive duo that only accentuates those classic lines. And the addition of big-rig roof lights, a visor, and huge mirrors add to the beefcake effect. Those whole thing rolls on modern 17″ Ultra Goliath wheels and Michelin rubber.

The massive body doesn’t ride on some antiquated horse and buggy frame, however. In its place lies a modified 1978 Chevy van chassis. Disc brakes up front help slow down the massive Chevy COE, and a 3.73 geared rear end brings it back up to speed while also retaining some semblance of gas mileage. Power, of course, comes from the venerable Chevy 350 small block, with an equally trustworthy 700R4 automatic transmission behind it.

This Chevy COE might have started life as a workhorse, but the interior is anything but. Power leather bucket seats are surrounded by custom bits, including a headliner with flames molded into it. The dash, sourced from a mid-80s truck, adds a little more modern flair. And we doubt you’ll want to throw parts in the custom bed lined with oak. Because even though this stunning COE was born to work, we’d say it’s more than earned a retirement full of easy cruising.
