Flawed Airbag Software Forces GM to Recall 4.3 Million Vehicles

General Motors is in trouble again, this time for an airbag issue that has nothing to do with Takata. Instead of the chance of metal shards shooting out of the airbag and puncturing you, however, software that controls the airbags in select GM vehicles simply might not work correctly and would fail to deploy an airbag should you get in a crash. Great.

It’s not as big or widespread as the Takata problem (nothing really is), but this recall still covers a massive 4.3 million vehicles worldwide (3.6 million in the U.S.) dating back to 2014. Here’s a list:

2014-16: Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet SS and Chevrolet Spark EV
2014-17: Chevrolet Corvette, Trax, Caprice and Silverado 1500, Buick Encore and GMC Sierra 1500
2015-17: Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban and Silverado HD, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra HD, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV

Since starting an investigation on the issue in early June, GM has found this issue to blame for one death and three injuries. This happened, reportedly, because the software might prevent the airbags to pop “in certain rare circumstances when a crash is preceded by a specific event impacting vehicle dynamics.”

If you have any of these vehicles, call or take your ride into a General Motors dealership to check if yours is included. If it is, a software update will fix the problem, and you should be good to go.
