Holden Bids Adieu to Chevrolet SS with Final Sedan

Final Chevrolet SS

All-black SS with manual transmission is on its way to the U.S. with a very special message underneath the hood.

The Chevrolet SS was a sedan specifically built for enthusiasts. With a 415-horsepower 6.2-liter engine lurking under the hood, power going to the rear wheels, and a six-speed manual transmission as an option, few cars could match the SS’ performance and usability. But the majority of drivers didn’t understand the SS, and poor sales led to its death.

The final nail in the coffin for the wonderful SS came today when Holden, General Motors’ Australian division, confirmed that the last SS had been built, reports Motor Authority. The final SS wears a menacing black paint job, has a proper six-speed manual transmission, and has the signatures of everyone that was involved in manufacturing the vehicle on the inside of the engine bay.

The vehicle, according to the outlet, is probably going to someone that either works for GM or one of the automaker’s dealerships. While the last SS was rolling off of the assembly line, Holden also confirmed that the last Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle (PPV) has been made, as well.

As Motor Authority points out, Chevrolet stopped taking orders for the SS earlier this year in February. The decision to cease production means the 2017 model year will be the SS’ last. Even though the SS was never meant to be a mass-produced vehicle, Holden only sent 12,953 SS sedans to the U.S. since 2014. That figure is significantly less than what Holden managed to export with the Pontiac G8. Holden brought roughly 41,000 G8s over between 2007 and 2009, claims Motor Authority.

Holden’s plant will close its doors soon forever, making an Australian-built car that’s sold in the U.S. an unlikely possibility in the future. Whoever gets to own the last SS to roll out of the Holden factory is one lucky enthusiast.
