Chevy 461X Heads

High-flowing Chevy heads were produced for just four years and saw duty in high-po Corvettes and full-size cars.

By now, you probably know that the Chevrolet Forum Marketplace is chock full of interesting rides and parts. But every now and then, we come across something so cool it’s worth highlighting. And few items are as deserving of that treatment than this set of 461X small block heads, parts that are becoming increasingly rare in this day and age. But you can nab these killer heads right now for the reasonable asking price of $1,500.

If you’re not familiar with the 461X heads, they were in production for just four years – 1960-1963. They saw duty mostly on the 327, but some were installed on the 283 as well. They’re particularly notable because they came from Chevy with 1.94″ intake and 1.50″ exhaust valves, which was pretty free-flowing for the time. And most machined them to go even bigger, to the ever-popular size of 2.02/1.60 for improved performance.

As you might imagine, many of these high-flow heads saw duty on fuelie Corvettes from the early ’60s. Those were the higher performance, 340 hp models. But these heads also saw duty on some 1962 and 1963 full-size Chevy passenger cars with the 300 hp 327. Those produced in the Tonawanda plant were exclusively used on those bigger cars. Flint heads saw duty on both full-sizers and Corvettes. The heads are quite easy to identify, as they sport an “X” underneath the #1 or #8 exhaust runner.

This particular set has been stored by the seller for over 30 years as backups for his race engine. They’re in fantastic shape, with no signs of porting or gasket matching. The push rod holes have been enlarged to accept guide plates, but they’re otherwise untouched. So if you’re in the market for a set of these rare Chevy heads, this is truly a fantastic opportunity!
