Stepping Up: 2022 Silverado Brings High-Clearance Steps to the Trail
Available on select 2022 Silverado 1500, Silverado HD models, Off-Road High Clearance Assist Steps dealer-installed option for rugged roads.
There are many tools needed to prepare your Silverado for the rugged roads and trails across the country. All-terrain tires. Heavy-duty shocks. A lift kit. A winch. Not to mention a few pieces of armor to protect your truck’s drivetrain. Just the right parts to survive in the rough country.
Of course, there might be one more thing you’ll need for your Silverado, especially if it rides high: steps. Rock sliders may be preferred, but big trucks like these don’t necessarily go out into the roughest patches to always need them. Chevrolet knows this. Thus, according to GM Authority, the 2022 Silverado 1500 and Silverado HD will have a new option: Off-Road High Clearance Assist Steps.
Originally available on the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500, the new steps are a dealer-installed option available only to crew cab models at present. A version for double cab models will arrive down the road.
Additionally, only select Silverado 1500 and Silverado HD models will have the option on their respective order books. For the 1500, Work Truck, Custom Trail Boss, RST and LT Trail Boss trims will have the steps. Meanwhile, the HD High Country will be the only trim level without the option.
To add these steps to your 2022 Silverado 1500 or Silverado HD of choice, you’ll need $1,095 and the RPO VXW code handy. The steps themselves are of a grippy, black material with the Chevrolet name stamped into the front section.
However, those off-road steps might be going on a different form of the 2022 Silverado 1500 at first. As GM Authority reported in July, there will be a 1500 Limited version available at the start of the 2022 model year. The Limited will serve as a bridge between the outgoing 2021 and mid-cycle-refresh 2022 trucks, coming with everything available to the 2021 model.
Why the delay? As Wendover Productions said back in June, the pandemic exacerbated long-standing logistics and supply issues, creating the perfect storm we have now. Production of the Limited begins in Mexico September 20, followed by Fort Wayne, Indiana on September 27. The non-Limited 1500 is set to arrive late into the 2022 model year.
