Vintage Chevy Truck Prices Skyrocket as Demand Grows
In the market for a vintage Chevy truck? Judging by recent auction prices, you might want to speed up that search.
Vintage Chevy truck prices have, for years, lagged behind their automotive counterparts. But that trend might be coming to an end, according to some recent data from auction house Barrett-Jackson. Over the last eleven years, a whopping nine Chevy trucks have crossed the six-figure mark, in fact. This should come as no surprise to enthusiasts, who have always known that vintage Chevy trucks make perfect canvases for killer customs.
“Vintage trucks, especially Chevrolets, have been gaining popularity with collectors, to the point they are rivaling muscle cars,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson Auction Company. “What’s interesting is collectors are looking for very different vehicles: The most collectible muscle cars are numbers-matching survivors; the most sought-after vintage trucks are full custom builds, and buyers are looking for both unique design elements and high-quality craftsmanship.”
To date, the most expensive vintage Chevy truck to cross the block at Barrett-Jackson is a 1957 3100 known as “Quicksilver.” Recognized as one of the finest custom truck builds of all-time, the truck scored an incredible sales price of $214,500 in Scottsdale, Arizona back in 2016. Built by Hot Rod Garage in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Quicksilver features handmade body panels and a 650 hp, 540ci Chevy big block.
Joining Quicksilver in the $200k+ club is a 1950 3100 pickup that sold for $205,700 at the 2017 Scottsdale auction. A SEMA build, the vintage Chevy truck also features a host of modifications including an LS3 crate motor.
Obviously, each of these six-figure plus trucks is heavily customized and cost a fortune to build. But as demand for these types of customs builds, it’ll become harder to find good sheetmetal to work with.
