1987 Chevy Silverado Build

A simple but effective square body Chevy built trades just a couple of original parts for new ones in the name of power and reliability.

Square body Chevy trucks have long been incredibly popular with enthusiasts for their simple, handsome good looks, which is something that’s not exactly easy to find in a world chock full of, well, not-so-attractive designs. As such, we’ve also seen the values of square bodies soar in recent years as more and more people seek them out – and nicer examples are seemingly drying up. Despite this, these trucks – including the C-Series built from 1973-1987 – are still quite popular targets for those looking to modify a vehicle as well, which is precisely what the folks at Hagerty are doing with this final year square body Chevy truck that’s been sitting around for a while collecting dust.

This 1987 R10 square body Chevy certainly looks like it’s in solid shape to begin with, though it’s been parked for some time after Hagerty purchased it locally and brought it back to the shop. The plan is to modernize it just enough to make it more pleasant and reliable to drive, a process that includes replacing the factory throttle body injection with a Holley Sniper 2 setup, as well as headers and a new dual exhaust, which should help unlock a little power while also supporting future updates.

This square body Chevy looks killer rolling on its original rally wheels and decade-old tires, which means the truck needs new rubber for safety’s sake – setting the stage for a staggered set of larger units. Hager is also adding drop spindles, coils, and brackets to get the vintage machine closer to the ground and hugging those new tires, while an Eaton TrueTrac rear differential will ensure that both tires are spinning at the same time when they’re trying to get that power to the pavement.

All of this work is still in progress, but it’s clear that this square body Chevy is well on its way back to the road. It’s not exactly what one would call crazy or over the top in any regard, but truthfully, we think that’s a good thing. After all, these trucks are quite cool as-is, and really just need a couple of modern upgrades to make perfect. Soon, this one will be tooling around with a bit more power and a killer sound, and that’s the perfect complement to its timeless style.
