Default 1987 C10 Trans TH700-R4 Clunks when shifting at standstill or 1st to 2nd

Just acquired 1987 C/V 10 5.7 TBI 4WD Auto. Transmission has rough/clunk shifts into reverse and 1st to 2nd about half the time, otherwise smooth. I've heard try adjusting the TV cable or changing the trans filter. Is this symptomatic of another issue?

I'd check the ujoints and trans mount first. Making sure the fluid level is completely full has always made my 700r4's run a bit smoother. A fluid/filter change wouldn't hurt either.

I've had the tv cable cause early or high rpm/hard shifts but not a clunk. If you do decide to adjust it, do your homework first.
You can smoke the trans within feet if you get it wrong.
