Question 1991 5.7l rusty distributor

My son's truck set up 3 years while he was deployed overseas. Now it will not start. Under the rotor cap, there was a lot of corrosion so we replaced the cap and button. The truck started for 5 seconds and then died. The rusted plate under the button has chipped off so I was wondering if there is a way to check that part?

Thanks,
Randel

Might be simpler to buy a good used unit rather then repair this one. I assume the button you speak of is the rotor. The plate the cap attaches to is not worth replacing.

The pickup coil in the distributor may be bad. The ignition coil may also be bad. Check out this link.
