Hello all, I got to looking at my RPO codes in my glove box today, and found a definition I found intriguing. As you may guess it was the code Z82, which this PDF says is the code for "trailering package (special)(reese type hitch). I also had ones for extra coolers, and a bigger alternator. I also found Q4B, which is supposed to be a GVW of 6200#'s. I am curious on what this could mean for these generations of trucks, does that mean I have a larger tow rating? If anyone knows anything, or can find something, or remembers something that would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!!! The RPO code sticker in my glove box.
GM’s original definition for the Z82 RPO was “Special Provisions. HD.”
It could mean a hitch was factory installed or that the rear frame/bumper was reinforced for adding a hitch or towing.
Does the VIN on the sticker match the VIN on the cab, door jamb or title? I’m curious because it seems unlikely GM would offer an “HD” (which one would guess means Heavy Duty) towing package on a 1500. If it doesn’t match, the glove box or liner could’ve been replaced with a junkyard find, and those RPO’s aren’t correct for your truck.
@Gumby22 I will have to check for aure, but I belive that to be a numbers matching glove box. I have not broke down and verified ever code, but I know everyone I understand the meaning of mayches my truck, that is what leads me to belive it is the corect sticker. I will check.
But any ways, I belive I have the factory intalled tow hitch. 1. I have the code in the glove box. But more importantly, 2. the hitch I have matches what many people in YouTube videos call the factory hitch. It has a sticker on it that I belive says make weight of 10,000#. Unfortunatly, I wonder if that is just a generic one for the hitch, not the truck.
If there’s no other identifying tags on the hitch that specify who made it, it’s likely the factory hitch. Aftermarket companies like Curt mfg usually have a stamped ID tag on the hitch, but even if it originally had one it certainly could’ve been damaged or removed in the past.
I don’t have any more info to offer about the RPO code definition.
Most likely GM was contracting the hitch production but I’ve no idea who it would’ve been at that time. If you haven’t already, you can try calling or visiting the parts dept at your local dealer. Take the VIN and pic of the RPO sticker with you and tell them you want to price a replacement hitch - GM’s VIN records don’t go back that far but they can still look it up by year and might be able to tell you more.
