'93 Suburban, freaky intermittent electrical short--won't start during short

There are several possibilities on what may be shorting - that is a primary ground for several components.
Given that it only sparks and won’t crank when the key is turned to start, the indication is that it’s a short between the starter solenoid ignition wire and that ground; however, even if you determine which component is causing the short, you’re still going to have to unravel the wiring harness to repair it.
On these trucks/suburbans, ALL of the primary wiring is bundled together at the right rear of the engine bay near the power distribution center.
You’re better off not delaying the inevitable by starting at the ground lug and unraveling the harness, working back towards the primary bundle. Problems like this are rarely limited to just one circuit, and even if it is, you’d want to inspect the other wiring near the short anyhow.
